My Aching Back

I love wrapping presents. Way back about a hundred years ago, one of the first Christmas jobs I had when I was in college was wrapping presents for customers at Sears. It was a free wrap and I learned to get quite creative with only two or three different kinds of paper and stick on bows. I remember one of my most challenging gifts to wrap was a vacuum cleaner. And on Christmas eve, just as the store was about to close, a gentlemen came up to the counter with this tiny little bottle of perfume for me to wrap. After I had finished he asked me how much was the charge. I said "no charge sir", Merry Christmas". He then tipped me a $10.00 bill. Now that was in the 1960's and $10.00 was a big deal. Ten dollars went a long way in helping me buy gifts for my family.

Usually I had almost all my holiday shopping finished and wrapped before Thanksgiving except for a few odds and ends. When my boys came home from college for Thanksgiving, one of the first things they would do would be to run to my bedroom and find the presents...shaking them, trying to figure out what was in each one. LOL....I think this year my youngest was a little disappointed that there wasn't a present to be found when he was home for Turkey Day.

Last night I got started on the wrapping. Do you do this? Sit in the floor trying to wrap, making a mess everywhere, back hunched over...killing you when you stand up. I've got to find a better method than this. Last year I was into polka dots. This year I decided to wrap most all the gifts in brown parcel paper and gold and red ribbon to kind of match this gold tree thing going on here. Happy wrapping everyone. :) ~ Lynn

Oh Lynn, I laughed when I saw your picture!! That's exactly how I wrap presents!!! I agree, there must be a better way, lol!! I also wrapped presents for the public when I first began my retail career. Everyone should have THAT experience, just one year. Love the brown parcel paper!

Brittany

I bought brown craft paper this year also and I do it on the floor and always misplace the tape and then the scissors and then the tape again. I need a crane to get me up of the floor. I read that you should wrap at counter height, but who has an extra counter big enough for all this nonsense!!

What a sweet story about your first job! I either wrap presents on the floor or take everything off the dining room table and go to town. I really like the idea of using the brown paper and pretty ribbons and bows. Have fun and I hope your back feels better :) Michelle

I start out on the floor, then whip everything off the dining room table and onto the floor then stand at the table and wrap. My back can't take that floor kneeling anymore, lol! Wanna come wrap my lot?

Lynn, What an honor to be added to your blog and I will do the same :) Michelle

Lynn...are we twins?? Were we separated at birth?? I do EXACTLY the same thing..and then I can't move. And my back is stuck in that position and I walk around like a gnome for awhile until I can stand up straight!!! I'm hoping that once I get my studio the way I want it, with the table I like which is the "perfect" height (better than my dining room table) I will use it.

I laughed out loud about the boys and shaking gifts!!! The wonderful memories of childhood (and teenage years).

Oh, Lynn, this is how I USED to wrap...until I got where I couldn't get up! Ha...Now I have a table where I do most of my wrapping. Hey, that would be a great post .."Show Us Where You Wrap Packages". If you do it, I'll sure chime in! Be sure to let me know.....
Have a good evening,

Wow -- a $10 tip was HUGE. In the 1960's my entire Christmas budget was only $25. I've used brown paper and plaid ribbon to wrap gifts for years... and I'm thinking a table would be mighty handy. It's one thing to get down there on the floor -- but getting back up -- yikes. Merry Christmas.

Oh, I love a good fruit cake, too. Not many people do, as you said. But, a really good one is just priceless to me. I just received an order blank in the mail for a Texas Pecan Cake and I think it has a little fruit in it, too. I may order one if I can take out a loan at the local bank....talk about expensive...WHEW!! Guess I'd better find a good fruit cake recipe and make it myself.....
Thank you very much if you add me to your blog favorites. I am adding you to mine!

Yes Lynn! This is exactly how I wrap presents. Have you ever seen those wonderful "wrapping stations" featured in some homes in decorating magazines. I mean an entire room dedicated to wrapping presents. I want that room!

What's you address, Babe? I'm sending you my stuff to wrap this year. I HATE IT!!!!!!! And, trust me, my wrapping SHOWS I hate it. Sore back, pain in the ass job. Other than that, I don't feel strongly one way or the other. Love, Esther

Oh Lynn, you are so cute! thank you for sharing that sweet story! My first job was at Sears too!

Wrapping gifts is one of my favorite things! Chad and I do the same thing every year, we sprawl out on the living room floor with hot chocolate and wrap and watch National Lampoon's Christmas! I love that movie. Wrapping for five boys takes a long time, lol! But we have a lot of laughs and good talks while we wrap. And yes, we both have a backache when we are done, lol!

Love ya,
Amy

I do climb in the floor until my back is killing me.
When I was 15 I wrapped for Otasco and hated every min. of it. I did love seeing all the people that is because I will still talk to a tree lol. i bet those floks that dot the gifts wondered who in the world wrapped this? I try and do it because I have to, but not my love.

Lynn...I hate gift wrapping! I wish I was a bit more patient with that part of gift giving.
I love using brown paper wrap though...so many ways to glam it up!

Hi Lynn,
I had to squint my eyes to make sure that wasn't a photo of me!! I, too, always end up on the floor...and then have to pop my knees back into place at the end!! I don't love wrapping, for the most part, but I do take care in wrapping the women in my life's gifts and try to make them real purdy.
I love reading your posts...you have a way with words!!

I had to chuckle as I read about your method of wrapping gifts...I do the very same thing as most of the others do who commented...are we all related?? lol
I am going to use up all my old wrapping paper this Christmas and if I run out I will use brown paper or birthday paper, it is after all Jesus birthday we are celebrating!
I am new to your blog and have really enjoyed reading back.(I'm not done yet) but just had to leave a comment when I saw your post today..(still chuckling)

I have never found a comfortable position for wrapping gifts. But I was thinking that I wanted to wrap my gifts in parcel paper but I wasn't sure how it would look. But I LOVE your presents. It's the perfect country look I was going for. Thanks for the inspiration.

Love,
Julie

Oh my! That reminds of of being 8 months pregnant one Christmas and trying to wrap presents on the floor. OH! The pain.

Ever since I stand at a high table!

I love wrapping. I like to put on the Christmas music and take my time making each gift pretty. However, realistically, I have 4 kids and rarely have time to hide away wrapping for very long. So, anyone who doesn't live in this house gets a pretty package. The others, get big corner ends and gobs of tape =) Blessings.. Polly

Greetings from California!

I am linking around tonight and found your cozy place! I am impressed that you start your wrapping around Thanksgiving! I haven't started shopping yet. I love gift wrapping but I am finding that sitting cross-legged anymore can be a killer!

I love your early wrapping and tip memory! One of my first jobs was also gift wrapping. I wanted to be more creative than they would let me. I would have loved a $10.00 tip!

Christmas Blessings!

This is something I am very familiar with. I always start at the table and end up on the floor. I love to wrap, it's soothing to me. My husband actually loves it too, but he won't admit it. I even think he's better at it.. :o)

Lynn, you sound so orgainized with your Christmas purchases and wrapping. I wish I could say the same, I save it all till way too late . Atleast though, I do most of my shopping on the internet so, it is pretty easy.

LOL! That's me too - or on the bed & trying to wrap something neatly on a squishy quilt isn't that easy!
I think everyone should have a gift wrapping station like this:
