Pink Petals ~ Pink Saturday

The heavy rains battered my peonies ......before I ever got a chance to pick a bunch and enjoy those glorious mounds of cotton candy imitators in my old ironstone pitcher. When they are full blown open, they remind me so much of summer's big fluffy clouds only in gorgeous shades of blush dawn, deep magenta and white.

SO.........

I was absolutely delighted to find the Mennonite ladies at a local market selling them. I bought all they had (plus their delicious breakfast buns). :) Aren't they gorgeous? I can't decide what Spring flowers I like the best. One day I think it's the delicious scent of the lilacs or the mock orange, then the next day it's the peonies and the gorgeous iris that poke their majestic heads thru the azaleas.  They are all so fleeting and oh so sweet and one of life's simple but precious pleasures.

And another one of life's simple pleasures, for me, is finding gorgeous, antique, Victorian Sunday Afternoon paintings while on my treasure hunts.  The days before photography, landscape, portraiture, and still life paintings were the amateur's Sunday afternoon pastime, thus the name Sunday Afternoon paintings.  Artistic accomplishment was seen as a marriageable trait and there was painting on everything from canvas to cardboard. The leisure painters celebrated life's simple pleasures in elaborate strokes of the brush, some quite accomplished.  They loved to paint overblown blossoms, such as hollyhocks and roses, either in a vase or as seen in the garden.   In my "hunts",  I have been quite lucky to find some glorious old paintings, most of them roses, but I considered finding this beautiful painting of peonies, housed in it's original frame,  a real stroke of luck.    Available at
The Vintage Nest and always at a discount for my blog readers.  :)

A very Happy Pink Saturday to you all and thank you Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for hosting.  She's having the anniversary party for our Pink day next week.  Hope to see you there.  Oh...one more thing....my COTTAGE GIVE-AWAY is still going on.  So if you haven't signed up just click here to do so.  There's something delicious for everyone.

The peonies are so full and beautiful, and I love the paintings. Since I was a toddler, I've loved flowers, flowers in vases, flowers in paintings - they all are adorned with beauty.

Hi Lynn~
I LOVE peonies - the smell is sooo wonderful! I planted a few peonies a couple of years ago but the same dogs that ate my planner also stomped on my peonies bushes. What's a pink girl to do?
I really like the picture too - love to see artistic work.
Happy Pink Saturday

The peonies are beautiful. We've been having heavy rains here too, I got out the other day and got pictures, however I haven't cut any blooms for fun pitchers to share. Hopefully, the others coming on will allow me to do that. HPS hugs ~lynne~

Very pretty. Not the rednecks.
Your peonies.

Your peonies are really impressive. I had a little girl bring one to me at school today. It was closed when she got on the bus, and when she got to school it was wide open in all of its glory. They are amazing flowers.

Love the painting as well. How pretty it is. I didn't know that about Victorian Sunday Afternoon paintings. Thank you for sharing that with me. How romantic that is. I so wish I lived close by as I would just LOVE to go on one of your shopping sprees with you sweet friend. You visit the most wonderful places.

Have a gorgeous weekend. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Oh Lynn I love peonies, you will just have to get out in the rain next time and save them! I seldom find rose paintings reasonably priced, but I will keep looking!

How lovely! I had never seen peonies before this year and now I'm being blessed to see them all around - from neighbors' yards to your lovely blog. And what delightful additions they make to anyone's landscaping designs. My senior mom might add them to her gardening projects as they are great butterfly garden plants. Thank you for sharing these.

Gorgeous peonies! I had the same problem this year with hail and storms battering my peonies twice after they just bloomed...so sad. They are stunning. And I've always loved the old rose paintings too. I have found 2 so far...love the hunt!

Good Saturday Morning, Dear Lynn. I have such great memories of the peonies my mom used to grow in our yard.....and how we would gather them and what ever other flowers were in bloom and take them to the cemetery on "Decoration Day". I also recall peonies having lots of ants in them.

You did find a wonderful painting!!! I haven't been junking, I mean treasure hunting, in weeks. Every time I think I'm gonna get to go, something happens.

We've had awful weather this week....cold and rain. More rain is on the way today, too. Makes me want to "nap" all of the time!

Hope you have a great Pink Saturday!!!!!!!

L, Dana

Lynn thanks for the lovely post and comment! I am thrilled to know you like that sweet little Williamsburg-made pot. I love love love your photo of those luscious peonies!! After all this rain here in New England, the only peonies I have blooming are P. japonica (woodland peonies). Although they are rather sweet, they do not have the impact of those herbaceous 'bombs'! (Have you ever planted the Japanese Single flowered ones? They don't tend to lie down after a lot of rain....Yet, lord knows they DO need a little sun!!!) My tree peony has tons of buds just about ready to pop....I hope to post a photo soon! Happy weekend to you, maria

Hi Lynn,

Happy Pink Saturday. It's been a while since I participated (my computer has been on the fritz) and so I am stopping by. Peonies are my favorite flower and I couldn't agree more about the fluffy cloud. I always think of a beautiful 1950s skirt when I look at them too. I'm so glad you were able to find your lovely peonies and the painting. I love to paint!!
