Savoring Summer on the Porch

"Is there a kindlier place than a porch?"  That's what I painted on the headboard of our screened porch when we first moved to this house. I love that saying but sadly I will lose it as the workers paint our screened porch and house this summer.  So today, I will just be posting bits and pieces of the porch because it's in disarray.  But I did so want to join in the big  BLOCK/BLOG party being hosted out in blog land this week by some lovely ladies and Kathy's Delightsome blog party 'Savoring Summer'.  The dark green/army green paint colors you see will be changed to a soft dove gray and white, which inevitably will result in other changes and then other changes.  You know how that goes....don't you? :) Every single piece on our porch came from flea markets,  antique shops and even through a little bartering.   The old cast iron floral garden chairs I spotted on the side of the road as I was headed down to the "rivah" one Friday afternoon.  There was a cardboard box sign leaning against them that said $5.00.  How fast did I stop my old station wagon, pay for them, throw them in the back and head on down the road???  Faster then you can say "love them".  Never mind that they had no seats or backs and this was way before vintage and shabby and chippy and white was in vogue.  I just knew they were "perfect".

So let's start my little tour of everything I love about summer and living on the porch.  :)   And then some................................  squeaky screen doors, painted old wicker furniture,  vintage garden items, the red, white and blue, dragonflies,  home made birdhouses,  gently turning rusty fan blades, faded pink and green, frogs ..........................................

In the late evenings I love to sit down by the lake and just unwind, letting the day slide from my mind.  Do you like my new chair?  Leon made it.

And what would a Savoring Summer post be without a favorite tomato recipe. I really messed up when I planted my tomatoes this year.  I was so excited about having the free fertilizer from our chickens that I am afraid I was a it over zealous with it.  My plants started turning yellow, like overnight. The old farmer down the road told me what I did wrong.  So I went out and bought more plants and it will be a while before I get my first tomatoes.  I did get my first cucumbers though of the season just yesterday. So crisp and fresh and wonderful. I would love to share my fresh salsa recipe with you. Everyone who tries it loves it and always ask for the recipe. On paper it doesn't sound that great but it is delish!  It's perfect for a late afternoon appetizer on the porch and extra perfect with a fresh margarita :)

Tomato Salsa

4 tomatoes diced fairly fine
1/2 cup celery, diced fine
1/2 chopped onion, diced fine
1/4 cup chopped green pepper, diced fine (I used a yellow bell pepper)
1/4 cup oil
2 T. red wine vinegar
1 t. mustard seed
1 t. coriander seed
2-3 T. green chilies diced (I use the little can you get in the Mexican section at the g. store)
salt and pepper (be sure to salt for taste)

Refrigerate for several hours for a good marriage.

A warm thank you to Kathy for hosting the Delightsome Party  "Savoring Summer" and to the girls who threw the best Block Party in blogland.  And to Ms. Beverly for her delightful Pink Saturdays.  I can't wait to go visit everyone. :)

Hi Lynn! I could spend hours drinking ice tea and relaxing on your pretty porch. I see you found a great spot for your chair. Thanks for the mention and I hope to see you at the Summer Entertaining party starting 6/23.

Lynn, I agree! We spend much of our time on our screened in porch / sun room. We added French doors and window with Phantom Screens a few years ago. Now we can use this space year round. No kindlier place than a porch! Thanks for sharing yours. Fresh coat of paint is always a good thing. ~ Sarah

This post is so you, you see it in every photo. I would say you know how to put the finishing touch of every thing you decorate. I am your number one admirer, I probably am a little jealous because I can't seem to get it right, when I decide to put things together. I am sorry I didn't mean to keep going on, but it is so true. Have a nice Sunday.

I adore all of your vintage treasures! Especially the bird house and the sweet little lamp, you have inspired me to do something with an old fabric-less shade that I have had for some time now.
Lovely porch! And lovely Adirondack chair!

I adore that saying----and it's just how I feel. Your porch is a spledid porch and all your decorating is spot on. When I was a little girl my Dad built a cabin at the lake and I spent my summers on the screened in porch he attached. I find myself going back there in my mind very often. There is NO better feeling.

Those are beautiful photos, Lynn.
I just love the birdhouse and the small wheel barrel.
Having a home where I could sit at night right at a lake is what I always have dreamed about but the dream never came true yet. Maybe someday when we will retire we might be able to make it come true. My husband, a passionate fisherman, sure would love it.
Best Regards

Happy Pink Saturday Lynne Sweetie...
Oh I could pull up a chair and sit right down by the lake with you. Each with a cup of tea (I love using my old blue Mason jar, as it takes me back to Grandma's on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.) What laughter and chatter there would be.

Love the porch. When I saw the screen door, it made me think of Summer and the banging of the screen door, Momma used to holler to stop banging the door. I know she misses that sound now. You have such a welcoming home, and each item so beautifully placed.

I love stopping over at The Vintage Nest. It is like coming home sweet friend. Have a beautiful Pink Saturday and a glorious weekend. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Happy Pink Saturday, Lynn. I know just what you mean about a porch.

We are lucky to have a front porch, a sunroom, a deck and a terrace. I love all of them, and there is no more time I enjoy more than sitting and listening to the quiet.

Your home is lovely.
