A Beach Wedding

As a young girl and teenager, I spent many evenings and all through the night, at the ocean, surf fishing with my father. Sitting in our old lawn chairs at the water's edge, there wasn't much talking but the unspoken words were loud and clear. Most of the sounds in the still of the night came from the crashing surf, the distant laughter of children as they chased ghost crabs or the quiet murmur of couples strolling past, while we quietly waited for the quick tug of a croaker or spot. Such cherished memories I treasure for always. So imagine my utter delight when we received an invitation in the mail for a beach wedding at Jennette's Pier at Nags Head.  The very same pier of a thousand fond memories.  My nephew and his darling wife-to-be chose to say their " I do's" surf side.

Jennette's Pier was the oldest pier at the Outer Banks, in the historic district of Nags Head, and built in 1939.  It was 754 feet long.  Many many fisher people (including me) have cast their lines from this great pier for over 60 years.  Battered and bruised by many Nor'easters and hurricanes, it was repaired numerous times but the great Isabel of 2003, finally did the old pier in and practically demolished an institution.  70 years later, after a rethink of the pier concept, there was a "sand breaking" if you will, of a new site for the, not only fishing, but educational concrete pier.  Now, not only a favorite fishing spot, it has instructional and educational classrooms, a snack bar, exhibits of all kinds and the most gorgeous top floor private room for grand functions. With it's panoramic majestic views, soaring cathedral ceilings, and fireplace, it's a spectacular backdrop for weddings.

So without further chit chat from me... (okay...maybe a little commentary :)...let's see some pictures of the wedding day!

With the recent hurricanes, the weather was watched constantly but the day dawned bright and beautiful.   This sunrise view was from our home away from home for a few days.

Cocktail hour before the ceremony began.  Lots of beachy colorful sundresses were worn,..... khakis, polos and white linen shirts.

 Entrance to the reception site.

People just walking the ocean pier and fishing people stopped to enjoy the ceremony.

Love this!......rose petals on the sand......looking almost like pink sea shells

Mom and Grand Mom

the beautiful bride and her Dad

the Best Man.....loved the 70's style vest and did you notice the boutonniere?  Made from hen and chicks succulents and a calla lily.  The succulents are so popular right now but never dreamed they could be incorporated into this!  Fabulous!

my brother.......the marrying man.......his personal words were so sweet and meaningful.  You did good Johnny!   xoxoxo

the bridesmaids.....  look at their dresses.....so beachy and flowing and they were barefoot (as were a lot of us) and they wore sunglasses to match their dresses.....what fun!

She and He

 pronounced Man and Wife

oops........now how did this photo get in here?  :)    actually the pier was the site of a surfing contest in preparation for the Eastern Championships later this month. That weekend the tropical storm had created some great waves.  The riders were out in droves.  This guy was practicing right out in front of the ceremony and my camera just happened to swing his way.....ahem.   :)
I claimed this seat for a while during the reception.......don't you love the view?

  Sis, me, and Sis........

the wedding party reception table......gorgeous isn't it?

happy Mom (my sis-in-law) and the groom.  He is a musician based out of Colorado and plays all over the United States......wonderful music.

Amazing cake!!!...........the colors of the ocean

there was lots of pre parties and after too.   I am sure a lot of you have seen this done but I hadn't.  Love the idea......flavored ice pops in white wine......delicious and refreshing on a hot day and so pretty for a party.  They were served at the bridal luncheon.

My biggest fan and I on a last walk at the beach before returning home.
J & DL...... I love you and wish you a life time of nothing but fun beach memories, happiness and joy.  xoxoxo  Aunt Lynn

SO many things to love about this -- all of the personalization really made it spectacular I'm sure! Have not heard of the ice pops in the drinks -- simply wonderful! It's silly but I really love that first pic with the laundry drying on the line . . . beautiful!

Oh Lynn we love weddings, that looked like a ton of fun, so glad the hurricane passed by, but they look like the kind of couple that would have made the best of it anyway!

What fun! And what a gorgeous couple. LOVED the cute cake. We had a beach wedding in our family once, many moons ago. Did the bride go wading in the water in her dress like our bride did? Made for some great photos and actually cleaned up wonderfully (I was a bit worried at the time, I admit)? And ours had rose petals too - definitely gorgeous on the sand. So much fun and such lovely family memories for a lifetime. Blessings!
