How to Make Vintage Zinc Lid Coasters

Hey there....long time no see and I miss you all.  :) Today I would like to share a quick (kind of)  ; )   project that's very charming and useful. Along with the vintage and antique pieces I hunt for for my retail spaces, I also try to include unique hand crafted pieces also. I  recently picked up quite a few vintage zinc lids and then saw an idea I thought I could expand on.  Of course, you could use new canning lids but the old zinc lids have so much character and patina.

Supplies you will need are:

  • a roll of fine grain cork
  • scissors
  • your lids
  • hot glue gun
  • stamp (s)
  • water proof ink pad
  • twine (optional)
I think my lids must have been in a barn back in the far corner for many, many years as they needed a thorough scouring.   Using one of the lids, trace the lid bottom on your cork.  This gets pretty tricky as the roll of cork tends to want to ..... well.....roll up and try your patience.  And be very careful as the cork also tears easily.  The smoother side of the cork is the side you want to have face up when you cut.

I used my tried and true nest stamp for this project but you could choose whatever you like.  Deer, birds, roosters are so popular right now or for a personalized gift use a monogram.  I stamped my cork circle, then ran a ring of hot glue around the inside edge of the lid and quickly inserted the cork.

And voila, there you have it.  I tied mine with rustic twine for presentation and will sell in the shop.

Don't forget the Share Your Style Party this week.  Opens at 7 pm. est, Wednesday evening.  There is so much inspiration there, you will love it.  I really am going to try and post more often on the blog.  Life has been so busy this past year but I miss you all so much xo
