Shabby Antique Petite Gift Books

It's no secret how I adore old books, the more loved patina on them, the better. I use them as interesting risers in my decorating and for display. The antique Christmas books are one of my favorites and the Victorian gift books are part of this love affair. The faded romantic colors are gorgeous on the covers and the old lithos are beautiful.  There is no more beautiful art work for display.

The Victorian gift books or Remembrance books were often literary annuals, primarily published for the holiday season, and were much loved as a gift from one to another.  They were 1800's petite readings, the covers lavishly decorated, and consisted of collected essays, short stories, prose and poetry, quite often by well- known authors.  The inside pages often had monotone illustrations.

One of my most recent finds, depicting an exquisite young lady cameo encased in pink ribbons.  Gorgeous shabby cream and light blue cover with, what I think, are pink roses by C. Klein.  This is not noted in the book but it sure looks like her work.  I love the sweet bird nest in the corner.  Just listed at The Vintage Nest market here.

Possessing the sweetness of the beloved tiny blue forget-me-not, this antique tiny book is to cherish.  Measuring just 6-1/4" x 5-1/4" with padded cream covers.  Bible Forget me nots is beautifully scripted in gold gilt.  It showcases beautiful Bible scriptures for 31 days.  Treasured so long ago and would truly make a most treasured gift for a friend today.

Richly illustrated old lithos and beautiful sentimental holiday poems in this charming little antique gift book.  Pebbled vanilla padded leather with a glorious faded red poinsettia and gold gilt lettering.  The Joy of Christmas displayed next to a big beautiful  poinsettia.  What could be prettier for the holiday season?

Hope you enjoyed this little mini-lesson on Victorian antique gift books. And maybe you'll find one on your hunts.  For yourself or a special someone. No time to look? I have the ones shown above at the "library" in my shop. This weekend we are having company and visiting old friends from college.  That's a lot of years ago!  :)  Hope your weekend is sweet and cool too.  xo

We just sent a whole box of those vintage books to auction. She probably kept 30 more to take to Florida. Love them. xo Diana
