Country Bartering

Meet Kate!

See her over there sitting at the end of the dock?  Kate is petite and  round. She has twinkling eyes, rosy red cheeks and an infectious laugh.  And she fixes our lawnmowers!  And other small engines.  Yep, this little 70 plus years old lady owns a small engine repair shop and she loves to fish.  She says she communes with nature while sitting out there in the peace and quiet and all is good with the world.

It's funny, in the country you get to know your neighbors that live five miles away. But when living in the city, I barely knew my up the street neighbors.  Out here people are quick to lend a helping hand and share what they have. And the bartering system is often seen.  In return for her getting to fish whenever she wants from our back yard dock, she's quick to fix our small engines and for a easy fee, if that.
It's been raining all day, but that doesn't bother Ms. Kate.  She comes down the hill carrying her worms and pole and chair, all decked out in her rain gear, nothing but her merry blue eyes can you see. She sits there for hours, happy as a clam.  She's on a mission now.  There's rumor there's some humongous cat fish in that lake.  A really big blue....Kate knows for sure.  You see, he broke her line the other day.  I imagine she'll keep trying for that fish, until the lake freezes over.

How sweet is this post. What a lovely neighbor you have. So true how many people do not even know their neighbors 500 yards next to them. Sad really. Even with rain it looks beautiful on the lake.

What a charming friend and lake scene and how good you share with each other.
I am having a book give away on my blog today, a memoir written by a friend who moved from China to the USA.

This is such a sweet post, Lynn. Kate reminds me of my husband's grandmother, Lucy. She loved fishing, too.

Hi Lynn! Hope you are having a superb summer! Sorry for the absence, but 2013 has been even worse than 2012... Anyhow, enjoy the blues of Grenada, and have a great vacation, if you can manage!!
All the best!
